However, I do feel like there’s one big problem with Novlr, and that’s the subscription model and the price. Some people might be put off by the fact that it’s mostly cloud-based in terms of storing your words, but as I was used to using Google Docs that has never really bothered me, and means less chance of things getting lost. It also isn’t as sleek looking as Novlr, and I really love the colour options that Novlr offers in its writing screen. Scrivener is an amazing program, but there’s definitely a learning curve to it, and I still hadn’t figured out or even discovered half its features in the two years I was using it.

SCRIVENER CHROMEBOOK SOFTWARE

Personally, I think Novlr is a great piece of software for novelists! For one thing, it looks great, and is incredibly easy to use, and I think that’s one way in which it beats Scrivener. It’s $10 a month (around £7.09 for my fellow Brits!), or $100 (£70.89) for a year, but as I’ve said, you can look out for NaNoWriMo and Camp NaNoWriMo discounts, if you take part. Novlr operates through a subscription model where you pay monthly or annually for access to the software.

I believe there is also some kind of in-built grammar checker you can use, plus various learning courses, and you can turn your files into ebooks, but I haven’t really used those features yet.

You can also use Dropbox or Google Docs sync to have the words you type in Novlr backed up, and you can even set it to integrate with NaNoWriMo, so that it updates your word count every day.Īs with Scrivener, Novlr saves your document constantly, so that you won’t lose your words if your computer crashes, and because it’s web-based, like Google Docs, you can access it from any device with an internet connection (although I believe you can also use it offline too, the same as with Google Docs). I feel like Scrivener is definitely the default program that writers reach for, and I can understand why: it’s amazing! But there are a lot of other programs out there that are probably worth a try, and I feel like Novlr is one of them.with some caveats.īut first let’s talk about what exactly Novlr can do: Novlr’s Features Now I’ve been using it for the best part of 6 months I thought I’d do a review of it for anyone interested in trying it out, or for people who, like me, had never even heard of it.

SCRIVENER CHROMEBOOK TRIAL

I tried it through the two-week free trial they offer and liked it enough to take the plunge and use my Camp NaNo discount on a year’s subscription. It did a lot of the things Scrivener did, and as it was purely web-based, it would work on my Chromebook.

I actually found out about Novlr when I spotted a 40% discount code that was available for participants of Camp NaNoWriMo last July, and after looking into it, it seemed like it might fit the bill.

In my search for an alternative, I ended up stumbling across Novlr writing software. When I first bought the laptop I was using Google Docs for all my writing, and that was perfectly fine, but it didn’t have a lot of the fiction-specific features available that I loved about Scrivener. I ended up buying a cheap Lenovo Chromebook which I’ve been loving using, but there has been one big can’t run Scrivener, my go-to writing software. So, a while ago my trusty Macbook died on me, and I ended up having to scramble to replace it as cheaply as possible.
